16.05.2022 – Imperiale Racing had a very exciting race in Pergusa last weekend on the occasion of the opening race of the Italian GT Endurance 2022 Championship.
The Italian team got to Pergusa resolute to perform well after the great results obtained in the 2021 campaign and fielded a new rookie pairing made by Raúl Guzmán Marchina (MEX) and Daan Pijl (NL) in the #6 Lamborghini Huracàn GT3 Evo.
The very peculiar features of the circuit of Pergusa, which is a fast and dusty racetrack have been the key aspects to master to shine. Pijl and Guzmán Marchina came to the fore posting great lap times including the best time in the second free practice session. The Dutch driver ended Q1 in second place with a time of 1’36.011s, while an as determined Guzmán posted the fifth-fastest time of Q2 in 1’36.259s. An incident that happened to Pijl in the closing session prevented him to complete qualifying though and therefore the #6 Lamborghini Huracàn GT3 Evo had to start the race from the last row of the grid.
This hiccup changed the strategy and the Mirandola-based team based its race on a recovery. The drivers on the track displayed their grit and speed and proved they can aim high in the classification. Thanks to a great race pace and spectacular overtaking moves Pijl and Guzmán drove the car up to P4 gaining a stunning 14 positions, which is one of the biggest recovers in the history of the team.
Luca Del Grosso (Team Manager):
“I believe that what obtained in Pergusa is the proof that being united is the key. I do not want to seem over-rhetorical, but the incident in qualifying could have made the team lose focus. Instead, everyone, from mechanics and engineers to the drivers reacted with further motivation to convert the grit into a good result on the track. The race pace has been very convincing, the pit strategy was right and we did a great job which was rewarded by the end result. The season is still very long and I am sure we will have other satisfactions”.
Imperiale Racing will get back on the track in the Italian GT Endurance Championship next July 14-17 at the International Circuit of Mugello.
