25.10.2022 – Another win, the third of this Italian GT Sprint 2022 campaign, ended Imperiale Racing’s season at the International Circuit of Mugello. The team proved once more to be one of the reference teams in the Italian GT.
Two Lamborghini Huracàn GT3 Evo were fielded by the Mirandola-based team: the #6 for Alberto Di Folco (ITA) and Stuart Middleton (GB) in PRO and the #9 for Paul August (LTU) in AM. The lineups confirmed performance and race pace that allowed Imperiale Racing to end the season with a great haul displaying the great job done by the whole team over the whole season.
After free practice, Imperiale Racing claimed a splendid pole position for race one as Di Folco posted the time 1’45.579s, which earned him the top spot of the grid. August qualified the #9 car in P3 of AM in 1’55.725s instead. August improved his benchmark in Q2 posting a 1’53.051s which earned him P2 of AM, while Middleton completed his best lap after 1’45.974s, which was the fourth fastest time of the session.
Race one has been a monologue by Imperiale Racing. Di Folco dominated the first stint building a big gap two times, i.e. before and after the safety-car. In the second stint Middleton did not make any mistakes and crossed the finish line on top rewarding Imperiale Racing with the third win in the Sprint series.
The performance of August has also been positive: he started from P3 of the category and played his cards thanks also to the good timing for the pit stop. The driver from Lithuania recovered one place and finished second in AM.
Sunday has sadly been meaner with satisfaction. Middleton started the race resolute to give his best and allow his teammate to fight for the title. A Full Course Yellow a few minutes after the drivers’ change voided the job done by Imperiale Racing and Di Folco was forced to a recovery and to rebuild his race. In the closing stages, a contact with a BMW M4 GT3 was judged irregular by the Stewards and this ended up in 25s additional time that relegated the #6 car to P10.
August claimed another podium in AM as he ended a solid race in P3 securing therefore the fourth podium in a row. This performance allowed August to end third in the AM drivers’ classification.
Luca Del Grosso (Team Manager):
“We gave all we had, and maybe a little extra too. The guys on the track and in the pits did an extraordinary job, the cars were fast and we showed good speed and pace. The gap was small and we paid the fee of the FCY in race two that arrived at the wrong time for us, right after our pit-stop. That was a pity as we were close to getting the best result, but we had a great season nevertheless. Imperiale Racing’s project in the Italian GT Championship has been growing this year and we claimed three wins in Monza, Imola and Mugello and four podiums in AM. We also got three overall podiums and two Pro-AM podiums in Endurance. We put a lot of effort in the growth of young drivers, we focused on seeking perfection thanks also to precious collaborations with Ferodo, Motul, OMP, SIM Maranello and finished the season with satisfaction even if, honestly, we missed the final victory by a whisker”.
